Empty Homes

In 2010 we formed the Empty Homes Partnership with Coast and Country Housing, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and East Cleveland Youth Housing Trust.

The aim of the partnership is to address the issue of long term empty homes alongside providing training, employment and volunteering opportunities for mainly young people in the area.  The scheme has attracted a temporary social housing grant via the Homes and Communities Agency to develop a number of homes and we are now working with Stockton, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool Councils.

The project has received a lot of local and national attention as a cost effective way of bringing empty properties back into use, alongside the creation and sustaining of jobs, the development of an apprenticeship program and training and volunteering opportunities within the organisations involved.  The properties renovated are leased and managed from private landlords by Coast and Country Housing with the renovation works being carried out by Community Campus and partners.

We are networking with similar schemes across the North of England to share knowledge and experience and we are developing stronger partnerships with training and development networks in order to gain maximum benefits from apprenticeships and training opportunities to bring empty properties back into use.
