About Us

We are a hardworking Third Sector organisation dealing with homelessness, training and property renovation across the Tees Valley. We provide affordable housing alongside emotional support to people who have experienced homelessness.

Community Campus ’87 was formed by a group of concerned individuals who were motivated to do something about the growing crisis of youth homelessness on Teeside in the mid 1980’s. The primary aim was to provide housing with support, to enable homeless young people to gain the skills and experience to get and then keep their own place to live. Realisation quickly came that homelessness was just the tip of the iceberg; and there was often a whole host of other issues which needed to be addressed so that the accommodation could be maintained successfully. Young people were lacking in confidence, had low self-esteem, experienced difficult family relationships, poor emotional wellbeing, and had low aspiration with no real goals in life to achieve. We have continuously developed our work so that we can offer a range of holistic, person-centred innovative projects and services for young homeless and other economically and/or socially disadvantaged people in the Tees Valley.

We believe that we are ‘More than just a roof’ by being a value driven organisation who are committed to meeting its social, economic and environmental objectives. Our main aims are to provide affordable housing, support and resettlement services, personal development, learning and training opportunities, building services and housing renovation projects.

We offer a wide range of services which include…

Supported Housing

We own 67 projects across Teeside providing over 100 bed spaces for homeless and disadvantaged people in Middlesbrough, Stockton and Hartlepool. Our model of support is based upon developing a positive relationship, working collaboratively with an individual, building belief that change is possible and understanding that setbacks are part of the journey to independence.

The residents in our service have experienced periods of homelessness, or unstable, insecure housing due to their lifestyle and housing history have limited housing options.

Many of our residents have multiple support needs and we take a holistic approach which helps to identify the links between the different areas of a persons life as social challenges do not occur in isolation. Each resident has their own Key Worker and their own support plan which takes into account an individual’s priorities, strengths and capabilities.

We have contracts with Stockton, Hartlepool and Redcar & Cleveland Councils to give support to homeless people and a wide range of people in need.

We are working in partnership with Stockton and Redcar local authorities to provide supported accommodation to unaccompanied minors working with a range of stakeholders to help the young people to start to rebuild their lives.

We continue to work with Hartlepool Borough Council on the delivery of homes for those who rough sleep and those at risk of rough sleeping. These partnerships build upon our skills and experiences we have gained over the last 35 years of front-line delivery to those in housing need across the Tees Valley.

Care and Repair Team

In our early years of operation we employed various contractors to complete repairs on our properties, and as the number of properties grew we decided to create our own maintenance and repair service, ensuring we are in control of costs, quality and customer care whilst also meeting one of our aims of creating sustainable employment. The Care & Repair Team now undertake the majority of repairs within our housing stock except for roofing, gas and electrical work. We now also take on commissioned work from other organisations from small scale repairs to major refurbishments.

Refurbishment of two empty properties on Upton Street and Stainton Street in Middlesbrough via our cohort of apprentices and college placements, with funding from the Nationwide Foundation to bring these properties back to use.

Apprenticeships

In keeping with our mission and values we have created opportunities for four apprenticeships within the Care and Repair Team. We know from our past experience that apprenticeships have a huge impact on people’s lives, not only equipping young people with the skills and experience to move onto permanent employment but also improving resilience, confidence and emotional well-being.

Working with Others

We have been commissioned to deliver management and governance oversight of Coatham House, a housing charity in Redcar providing supported accommodation and floating support to growing numbers of clients in the town. We continue to engage with the Centre for Social Justice, Homeless Link and other campaigning organisations to ensure the voice of our clients is heard and they can have direct input into social policy reform. We continue to work with Lloyds Foundation to offer support to charities who are diversifying into housing and we also look forward to counting our support with the Springfield project in Cumbria. We continue to encourage and support a number of agencies that are working with those in housing need – all that we work with are experiencing a massive surge in demand for core housing services.
